🏛️ About the Institution – Government College of Fine Arts, Chennai

The Government College of Fine Arts, Chennai, was originally started as the Madras School of Arts in 1850 by Dr. Alexander Hunter, a British surgeon. The main goal was to train students in both fine and industrial arts. Over the years, it became a center for artistic education in India.

In 1961, the school became a full-fledged college and began offering degree programs. Famous artists like E.B. HavellN.R. Balakrishna MudaliarD.P. Roy Choudhury, and K.C.S. Paniker helped shape the institution’s growth. In 1991, the college came under the Department of Art and Culture, Tamil Nadu, and in 2016, it was affiliated with Tamil Nadu Dr. J Jayalalithaa Music and Fine Arts University.
